Single Handed Axes
Single handed axes, also known as throwing hatchets or tomahawks, are smaller and compact versions of the normal sized axe. Made from lightweight and durable materials, single handed axes are designed to be thrown for long range attacks or target practice.
Single Handed Axes Blades
Most single handed axes are made with stainless steel axe heads. Stainless steel is an ideal material to use for a single handed axe, as it is lightweight, very sharp, easy to maintain, and affordable. Additionally, some single handed axes are made with stonewashed stainless steel blades. This further increases the durability of the blade, but may add a bit of extra weight to the axe.

Damascus steel is another prominent material used to make single handed axe heads. The damascus single handed axes are much more durable compared to their stainless steel counterparts, however they are heavier and more expensive, making them less ideal for throwing target practice and long range strikes. Rather, due to their heavy duty characteristics, damascus single handed axes are primarily used for cutting rough materials, such as wood and hide.

Single Handed Axes Handles
Single handed axes are made with a variety of handle materials. Common materials used to make the handles include wood, stainless steel, rubber, and G10 handles. Stainless steel handles are designed to be an extension of the stainless steel axe head. These axes are specifically known as full tang – meaning the stainless steel blade extends fully into the handle. These are considered the most durable axes, as the likelihood of the axe head breaking off from the handle is slim to none. You may be thinking why make the handle out of the same material used to make the axe’s head, wouldn’t it be difficult to hold and cut my hand? Thankfully, this problem is circumvented due to the stainless steel handle being dull (e.g., unsharpened). Additionally, the stainless steel handles are wrapped with nylon, which helps provide a more comfortable grip around the single handed axe.

Wood is considered a more traditional and all purpose material used to make single handed axe handles. Unlike stainless steel handles, wooden handles are not a continuation of the axe head. However, they are still relatively durable and provide a secure grip.

Rubber is another material used to make single handed axe handles. Using rubber material to make the handle has its own advantages. For instance, they provide a secure and comfortable grip around the axe. However, the most important characteristic of the rubber handle which differentiates it from the other materials is its ability to provide a secure grip in rainy and wet conditions. On the other hand, during wet conditions, wood handles and stainless steel handles may become a bit slippery when held. The nylon cord wrap around the stainless steel may circumvent this issue to an extent.

G10 handles are primarily used in single handed axes for one purpose – augmented grip. The G10 handles are wrapped around the stainless steel handles and are textured.

After looking at the variety of materials used to make single handed axes, the main question is: Which is the best handle material to select when purchasing a single handed axe? It depends on what you’re looking for. Here’s what we recommend.
- Rubber and G10 Handles: Perfect for those looking for a strong and secure grip when practicing throwing and long range strikes. These materials are considered more safe, as there is a lower chance of the axe slipping out of your hand. We recommend these handles for beginners.
- Stainless Steel and Wood Handles: These handles are great for more experienced throwers. These axes are durable and very sharp, and are more survival oriented.
The best of both worlds
